In Chinese Medicine, there are twelve primary meridians that relate to the main organs of the body and it is these that are typically used in standard acupuncture to treat general illnesses and disorders.

Underlying these more superficial energy channels are what are called the Eight Extra or Extraordinary Meridians. Although known in Chinese Medicine for hundred of years they are not commonly used in Western Acupuncture treatments. They are traditionally recognised as working at a much deeper level and represent a profound way to heal our bodies and minds.

What are the Eight Extraordinary Meridians?

The Eight Extra Meridians (8EMs), are energy channels that form at the moment of conception; immediately after the fertilisation of the egg that we once were. They represent the first eight cellular divisions of our fertilised egg, before our cells began to differentiate. By treating here it is as if we are treating our very blueprint for how we can be in the world in the purest sense. They represent our very deepest selves; the blueprint of who we originally were 'designed' to be.

How are they used in treatments?

8EM treatments are wonderful to intersperse with the chakra treatments. They work on similar energies but tend to be more grounding and emotional and more embodied in their nature.

We will usually begin with the outer Extra Meridians and move inwards. This is flexible but usually this works well with helping to ground and balance the energies from the chakra patterns being worked with.

Every individual is different and sometimes it might be useful to work on one set of Extra Meridians for a few sessions until the relevant energies, blocks or issues are resolved enough to progress further. As always, I am happy to answer any questions you might have so please let me know if you would like to know more.

The 8 extra meridians are well known in Chinese Medicine but generally little used in acupuncture practice in the West. They represent a very deep level of our being and can transform our health and self perceptions in profound ways. They marry beautifully with the chakra patterns, helping to ground and integrate the chakra energies into our changing physical and psychological states.
